MultiChoice has launched SuperSport Swahili, a dedicated 24-hour sports channel broadcasting in Kiswahili for audiences in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The launch took place on 5 November, coinciding with the introduction of the group’s restructured DStv and GOtv packages in the three markets.
The channel expands MultiChoice’s sports offering with a full-time Kiswahili-language service, rather than relying solely on translated commentary feeds or audio-language options attached to existing channels. It is available on DStv channel 216 to subscribers on the Sports and Ultimate packages, as well as through the DStv app. In Kenya and Uganda, GOtv subscribers can access it on channel 570 through the Sports package.
The package placement is significant for the channel’s potential audience and commercial positioning. SuperSport Swahili is included in paid sports tiers rather than the entry-level packages, positioning Kiswahili-language sports coverage as a premium offering. This gives advertisers and rights holders a defined audience proposition, although access remains dependent on subscribers choosing the relevant packages.
The launch also comes ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda will co-host. The timing gives MultiChoice an opportunity to strengthen its regional sports offering ahead of a major tournament hosted across the three markets. A dedicated language service could also provide a platform for building stronger connections with local audiences around regional and international sporting events.
SuperSport Swahili forms part of a broader package restructuring announced for the three countries, through which MultiChoice is adjusting its channel and sports propositions. The service’s availability across both DStv and selected GOtv packages extends the Kiswahili offering beyond satellite television, although its distribution differs by market and platform.
Channel numbering should be understood within the relevant national line-up. DStv channel 216 refers to the East African service position and should not be treated as a continental channel number; the same position in South Africa carries a different service.
For MultiChoice, the launch represents a more substantial investment in language localisation within sports broadcasting. Its longer-term significance will depend on the breadth of sports coverage, audience uptake and whether the channel can build a sustainable commercial proposition across Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
