MultiChoice To Remove JimJam From DStv In November Channel Line-Up

MultiChoice will remove AMC Networks International’s preschool channel JimJam from DStv on 11 November 2026, ending its carriage on the platform after approximately 13 years. The channel joined DStv in November 2013.

The operator has confirmed the removal but has not provided a specific reason, saying only that it continues to review and refine its channel line-up. Subscribers who lose access to JimJam are being directed towards alternative children’s channels, including PlayRoom, Cartoonito, CBeebies and DreamWorks, depending on their subscription package.

The decision adds to the changes affecting third-party channel distribution on DStv as MultiChoice operates under Canal+ ownership. Although the removal of a single preschool channel does not establish a wider strategy, it highlights the ongoing need for content suppliers to maintain commercially viable carriage agreements with pay-TV platforms.

For channel owners, the absence of a stated reason leaves key questions unanswered, including whether the decision reflects audience performance, commercial terms, programming overlap or broader portfolio considerations. MultiChoice has not disclosed whether JimJam’s channel position will be reassigned to another service or removed from the line-up.

The preschool category is particularly relevant because DStv carries several services targeting young audiences and their families. Removing one channel while retaining alternatives may change the competitive landscape for suppliers seeking distribution and visibility among South African households.

For African broadcasters and international channel operators, the development reinforces the importance of monitoring carriage agreements, renewal dates and distribution strategies. As pay-TV businesses review costs and channel portfolios, third-party suppliers may need to demonstrate audience demand, strengthen their commercial propositions and explore additional routes to viewers through streaming and digital platforms.
