Rwandan Short Film ‘Remnants’ Will Debut On 15 October – Explores Memory, Loss And Generational Inheritance

Rwandan short fiction film Remnants will make its public debut in Rwanda on 15 October at the All African Independent Film Festival at the French Institute in Kigali, bringing a story of memory, loss and generational inheritance to audiences.

The 25-minute film follows Lilly, a young woman born after the Genocide against the Tutsi, who has never met her grandfather and possesses only a damaged photograph of him. Seeking to restore the image, she takes it to Emmanuel, a photographer and restoration specialist.

The encounter takes an unexpected turn when Emmanuel recognises the man in the photograph. Enock’s identity is connected to Emmanuel’s own unresolved experiences from 1994, while he has spent decades restoring photographs and searching for his mother, who disappeared during the Genocide.

Lilly’s seemingly straightforward request therefore becomes a catalyst for buried memories, confronting both characters with questions surrounding loss, guilt, responsibility and the ways personal histories survive across generations.

Writer-director Zion Sulaiman describes Remnants as a human story about memory, silence and guilt, centred on a generation attempting to understand a past it inherited rather than directly experienced.

The film also demonstrates how a tightly constructed visual narrative can carry significant emotional weight without relying heavily on exposition. The damaged photograph serves as the central storytelling device, connecting two generations and gradually revealing the histories behind the characters.

For Rwanda’s screen industry, the film’s festival trajectory provides another example of locally produced stories engaging with complex historical and social subjects through contemporary filmmaking. Its first public screening in Rwanda will be followed by preparations for international festival and awards submissions.

As African filmmakers increasingly seek international audiences, Remnants highlights the potential of short-form fiction to tell locally rooted stories while addressing themes that can resonate across markets.
