While broadcasting companies throughout Africa are pursuing digital transformation by migrating to IP-based workflows, cloud-based production environments, and multi-platform content distribution, the need for cybersecurity has never been greater to guarantee the continuity of operations, integrity of content, and public confidence. With these new challenges, Broadcast Media Africa (BMA) will host an industry webinar on Tuesday, 08 September 2026, to be held online under the title “Securing the Signal: Cybersecurity Threats and Defence Strategies for Broadcasters.”

The webinar has been developed to provide senior broadcast executives, technology leaders, engineers, regulators and cybersecurity professionals with a comprehensive understanding of the rapidly evolving threat landscape confronting modern broadcasting operations. The forum will examine practical approaches to strengthening cyber resilience across the broadcast value chain, from content acquisition and production to transmission, distribution and audience delivery.

The growing convergence of broadcast and information technology (IT) infrastructure has greatly raised the industry’s vulnerability to advanced cyber threats. Today, broadcasters operate in an increasingly challenging environment, from ransomware attacks that can interfere with transmission and playout to AI-generated deepfakes and malicious content that can jeopardise content authenticity. Concurrently, the industry’s increasing contribution to national critical information infrastructure has increased the critical need for good operational and governance-level cybersecurity measures.

The chief executive officer of Broadcast Media Africa, Mr Benjamin Pius, said that the forthcoming forum has been organised to provide practical information and tested best practices to help industry stakeholders protect critical infrastructure, safeguard content assets, and ensure audience confidence in the current and future digital media landscape. “The continued digitalisation of broadcasting opens up new opportunities for innovation and operational efficiency; however, it also brings new vulnerabilities that need to be addressed strategically at both organisational and industry level, and cybersecurity must now be considered a key aspect of broadcast resilience,” he added.

The programme will cover a wide variety of key security challenges to broadcast security, such as ransomware and distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, signal jamming, insider threats, security of cloud and IP infrastructure, AI-enabled disinformation and deepfake detection, connected studio technologies, organisation cyber awareness and incident response planning. Special focus will be on the specific challenges that African broadcasters experience, such as legacy infrastructure, limited resources and changing regulations.

The forum will also offer practical advice on securing broadcast transmission networks, securing cloud-based production environments, improving the security of content with new technologies, and creating organisational security cultures that can effectively cope with increasingly complex cyber risks. Participants will thereafter receive valuable insights from expert presentations and will participate in moderated and structured discussions that will take into consideration solutions suitable to the African broadcasting markets.

The one-day online event will feature presentations from recognised industry experts, interactive panel discussions and networking opportunities for senior decision-makers from broadcasting organisations, regulatory authorities, national security agencies, technology providers and cybersecurity firms. Expected participants include Chief Executive Officers, Chief Information Officers, Chief Technology Officers, Heads of Operations and Playout Centres, Risk and Compliance Officers, Broadcast Engineers and Cybersecurity Solution Consultants.

As cybersecurity continues to shape the future of broadcasting, the forum will provide an important platform for industry collaboration, knowledge sharing and strategic dialogue on strengthening the resilience of Africa’s broadcast ecosystem.
