Tema, Ghana – The streets of the coastal Ghanaian town of Tema witnessed scenes of joyful celebration after football fans gathered to celebrate Spain’s victory against Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, thanks to the feats of Nico Williams, a Spanish footballer of Ghanaian descent.
Video shows Emmanuel Dzakpasu, known to many as Efo Kwame and a family friend of Nico Williams, arriving at a local cafe where a group of fans had gathered to watch the final match. Before the start of the game, Dzakpasu showed some photos he took while spending time with Nico and his brother, Iñaki Williams.
“I’ve got lots of happiness to see someone whom you know at the highest platform in the world of football,” said Dzakpasu. “The reason why I support Spain is because of the family and the relationship I built with them over the years.”
The first meeting of Dzakpasu and the Williamses was at their visit to Ghana, which Dzakpasu facilitated. “One of the most amazing families,” as he referred to them, also considering their humility and relationship to their Ghanaian background.
Even though the Ghana team was knocked out early, Dzakpasu noted that many fans were still supporting Spain due to Nico Williams. “People say we are still playing because Nico is still playing,” he stated, emphasising that many people have been extremely proud of a Ghanaian descendant making it big in football.
Born in Spain to Ghanaian parents, Williams has become one of the most outstanding attacking players for the Spain team while staying connected to Ghana. After Spain’s World Cup victory, he was seen giving his winning medal to his mother, who had travelled all the way from Ghana to Spain.
