MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) Uganda has announced the appointment of Phrase Lubega as the new managing director (MD) as part of its initiative to enhance financial inclusion and promote digital innovation throughout the country. This appointment is pending regulatory approval from the Bank of Uganda.

Lubega succeeds Sarah Bateta Okwi, who has served as acting MD and guided the fintech division through a transitional phase for several months.

Bringing over 30 years of executive experience, Lubega has an extensive background spanning the telecommunications, information technology, and financial services sectors. Most recently, he served as the interim MD for MoMo Payment Service Bank in Nigeria, where he focused on developing long-term strategies and digital banking frameworks. During his tenure, the West African operations experienced significant revenue growth, improved operational efficiency, and the launch of new products to strengthen market presence.

MTN highlighted Lubega’s extensive career within the MTN Group, where he held key positions including Group executive for fintech commercial operations and general manager for commercial and go-to-market strategies. In these roles, he played a vital part in expanding mobile money offerings and enhancing customer retention and acquisition across various countries.

Serigne Dioum, Group CEO of MTN Group Fintech, expressed confidence in Lubega’s abilities, stating that his market expertise and strong execution skills will be crucial to advancing their objectives in Uganda by delivering secure, innovative digital financial solutions that benefit individuals and businesses alike.

Sylvia Mulinge, chairperson of the board of directors for MTN Mobile Money Uganda, shared the board’s enthusiasm for Lubega’s appointment, emphasising his solid understanding of the business and significant governance experience. She also acknowledged Sarah Bateta Okwi for her effective leadership during the interim period.
