South Africa: Studiocanal Partners With Sun Africa On Theatrical Distribution

Studiocanal has entered into a three-year theatrical distribution agreement with Sun Africa Group (SAG), part of the Telefilms Group’s Sun Distribution Group. This deal aims to enhance Studiocanal’s presence in one of Africa’s prominent film markets by covering a range of English-language feature films in South Africa.

As part of the agreement, SAG will oversee the theatrical release of Studiocanal’s primary English-language slate, which includes animated titles, films from its genre label 6th Dimension, and select productions developed in collaboration with local broadcaster M-Net. The partnership is designed to ensure a consistent flow of both international and South African films for local audiences.

Kicking off the collaboration will be “Pressure”, a thriller directed by Anthony Maras (known for “Hotel Mumbai”) and starring Andrew Scott, Brendan Fraser, and Kerry Condon. Other anticipated releases under this agreement include “Full Phil”, a comedy directed by Quentin Dupieux featuring Woody Harrelson and Kristen Stewart, which recently premiered as a midnight screening in Cannes, alongside Danny Boyle’s “Ink”, “Elsinore”, “The Custom of the Country”, and Sean Byrne’s “The Mannequin”, with more titles expected to be announced soon.

This partnership builds on a long-standing relationship between Studiocanal and SAG, which has seen collaborative efforts since SAG’s inception, including the South African release of “We Live in Time”, a Studiocanal drama starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh.

Studiocanal is actively expanding its offerings in South Africa, as demonstrated by the recent announcement of “The Road Home”, directed by Academy Award-winner Bill Condon and featuring Cynthia Erivo. This film, set to commence shooting in late June, tells the story of the friendship between musicians Hugh Masekela and Paul Simon during the apartheid era, highlighting the studio’s commitment to narratives rooted in the region.

This distribution deal is part of a broader strategic initiative by Studiocanal’s parent company, Canal+, to enhance its creative and commercial footprint across Africa.
