Botswana has expressed appreciation for its enduring collaboration with Huawei, which plays a vital role in the country’s efforts to build a knowledge-driven, digitally inclusive economy.
During his keynote address at the Huawei Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Congress 2026 in Gaborone, Shawn Ntlhaile, the assistant minister of communications and innovation, advocated extending such partnerships. The congress, themed “Advancing All Intelligence,” focused on the ongoing transformation of societies and economies due to the fourth industrial revolution, which Ntlhaile described as an urgent priority for Botswana’s digital transformation.
He highlighted that Botswana’s development agenda hinges on expanding broadband, adopting cloud technologies, and advancing artificial intelligence. The government’s initiatives, such as the Village Connectivity Project, aim to enhance high-speed internet access in rural areas, schools, and healthcare facilities to close the digital gap and promote inclusive participation in the digital economy.
Ntlhaile added that Botswana is shifting its focus from merely connecting individuals to cultivating intelligent, interconnected systems that foster innovation, boost productivity, and improve public services.
On the topic of e-Government transformation, the assistant minister noted the rapid progress in digitising government services to enhance efficiency, transparency, and accessibility for all citizens. He stressed the importance of strategic partnerships in realising the nation’s digital goals, emphasising Huawei’s significant role in Botswana’s ICT development journey.
Ntlhaile concluded by stating that events like the Huawei ICT Congress are crucial for promoting collaboration, innovation, and knowledge sharing, all essential components for advancing the country’s digital transformation agenda.
