In a groundbreaking decision, the Paris Court of Appeal has taken significant steps to enhance the protection of content from the global media and entertainment group CANAL+. This ruling solidifies CANAL+’s leading role in combating audiovisual piracy.
On March 27, the court ruled in favour of CANAL+ regarding the blocking of illegal streaming and IPTV services through alternative DNS providers, including Google, Cloudflare, and Cisco. This unprecedented ruling in France signifies a major turning point in safeguarding content and reinforces CANAL+’s commitment to combating piracy.
The Court validated the effectiveness and proportionality of blocking illegal streaming and IPTV services via alternative DNS providers. This decision has been positively received by the group, which operates in over 70 countries.
Having successfully obtained initial rulings in 2022 for blocking illegal streaming sites through Internet service providers, CANAL+ continued to strengthen its position with subsequent rulings in 2024 and 2025 involving alternative DNS providers, content delivery networks (CDN), proxy services, and VPNs. These decisions from the Paris Court of Appeal are fully aligned with the Group’s strategy of holding all technical intermediaries accountable in the fight against audiovisual piracy.
