The BBC World Service is set to launch a series of AI-animated videos based on its Witness History program on YouTube. This initiative will transform five recent episodes, which are normally available only in audio format, into engaging visual animations.
The first episode, titled “The World’s First Labradoodle,” is scheduled to be released on the BBC World Service YouTube channel on March 1. Subsequent episodes will include topics such as “Brazil’s Biggest Bank Heist,” “Ramesses II’s ‘Mummy Makeover’,” “The Discovery of Lord Sipan in Peru,” and “Arrested for Playing Football in Brazil.”
1UpMedia, a podcast-to-video studio, produces these animated videos. The company’s approach integrates human guidance with tailored AI tools for each project, while ensuring proper licensing and credit for contributors and artists involved.
1UpMedia also claims it can produce a first video adaptation for a podcast in about two weeks, including all necessary edits and approvals, before shifting to a weekly release schedule as the creative direction becomes established.
Fred Durman, Head of Business Development at BBC World Service, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “This exciting initiative harnesses generative AI to breathe new life into our original programming, allowing us to connect with new audiences in innovative ways.”
Anna Doble, Digital Editor at BBC World Service, added, “We’re delving into AI technology to visualise these captivating audio narratives from Witness History. We are eager to see how new audiences will respond to this fresh approach.”
