The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital solutions into various sectors, including filmmaking, has sparked significant discussion. While AI has the potential to streamline and enhance the filmmaking process, it raises important questions about its implications.
In response to these developments, the Nigerian Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has established new guidelines. Dr Shaibu Husseini, the executive director and CEO of the NFVCB, recently emphasised that creators must transparently disclose the use of AI in film production. He highlighted the need for proper indemnities to be in place before the film’s distribution.
Dr Husseini encouraged filmmakers and animators to exercise diligence in this matter, ensuring they credit all contributors fairly. He also addressed critical industry issues, stressing the necessity for clear disclaimers in fictional films, particularly regarding the portrayal of substances like tobacco and narcotics, as well as ritual practices. While the Board has not outright banned the depiction of money rituals, it expects filmmakers to include appropriate disclaimers and to be aware of the potential consequences associated with such themes in their work.
