Senegal stole the spotlight at the 2025 Sotigui Awards in Ouagadougou on the 15th of November, taking home multiple honours and cementing its reputation as a powerhouse in African cinema.
Video footage from the ceremony shows winners celebrating on stage amid rapturous applause. Ibrahima Mbaye claimed the Sotigui d’Or for his role in Ni Chaînes Ni Maîtres and also won Best Actor of the Diaspora.
Other Senegalese winners included Cheikh Babou Gaye, named Best Actor, West Africa, for Nanas, and Diariatou Sow, who took Best African Hope (TV Series) for Curdle. Pape Aly Diop won Best African Hope (Film) for Timpi Tampa, calling the recognition “a historic moment.”
Côte d’Ivoire also made its mark, with Fortune Akakpo receiving Best African Male Actor in a TV Series for Les Nounous.
The 2025 Sotigui Awards also tackled pressing industry issues, hosting discussions on sexual harassment in African cinema under the theme: “African cinema facing the challenges of sexual harassment: from indignation to action.”
