Burkina Faso Pioneers AI Integration In Public Broadcasting With RTB Partnership

The Ministry of Digital Transition, Posts, and Electronic Communications of Burkina Faso has forged a pioneering partnership with Radio and Television of Burkina (RTB) to harness artificial intelligence (AI) for enhancing the accessibility of information and communication services throughout the nation.

The agreement, signed on October 21, 2025, by Minister Dr Aminata Zerbo/Sabane and RTB Director General Atéridar Galip Some, marks a significant advancement in integrating AI into the country’s public service broadcasting and digital communication framework.

This collaboration supports the government’s ongoing commitment to using AI for inclusive development, emphasising improving information delivery and broadening access to content for all citizens, irrespective of their language or literacy backgrounds. The initiative is a component of a wider national strategy centred around three primary objectives: creating a detailed roadmap for AI integration, initiating awareness and training programs—including a national AI conference set for October 28, 2025—and rolling out pilot projects in vital sectors such as health, meteorology, security, and information sharing.

Through this partnership, the Ministry and RTB aim to enhance information accessibility in local languages, ensuring that citizens who do not speak French can easily comprehend public communications. A live demonstration presented a groundbreaking translation tool capable of converting Mooré to French and vice versa, developed by specialists from the Interdisciplinary Centre for Artificial Intelligence for Development (CITADEL) at the Virtual University of Burkina. This advancement showcases the country’s commitment to AI-driven linguistic inclusion and technological autonomy.

The collaboration is also poised to bolster content creation and public service broadcasting, with RTB exploring AI applications in local media production, such as Burkinabe cartoons and culturally pertinent programming. RTB’s leadership believes this initiative will enable the national broadcaster to accomplish its mission of providing high-quality, accessible information while promoting national identity and linguistic diversity.

This agreement follows a previous partnership with the National Meteorological Agency (ANAM) and represents another key milestone in Burkina Faso’s path toward digital transformation and AI integration across public institutions. It highlights the government’s aspiration to establish Burkina Faso as an active participant in Africa’s AI revolution, leveraging technology to promote inclusion, innovation, and cultural empowerment.
