Eswatini: MTN And Paramount Africa Launch Initiative To Enhance Online Safety Awareness For Families

MTN Eswatini has unveiled a pioneering partnership to educate families about the risks of using the internet without precautions.

In a recent announcement on their social media platforms, MTN shared their enthusiasm for launching the “Room of Safety” program, created in collaboration with MTV Base and Paramount Africa. “We’re thrilled to launch this initiative by The MTN Group. It’s a perfect opportunity for parents, caregivers, educators, and children to learn about the importance of protecting kids from the hazards of excessive internet exposure,” the statement read.

The MTN Group asserts that everyone should enjoy the advantages of a connected life. Through this new series, they aim to enhance awareness of online safety and continue to #HelpChildrenBeChildren.

The series started this past Sunday, featuring Shamiso alongside Monde Twala, MTN Group Executive for Sustainability and Shared Value, and Senior Vice President and General Manager of Paramount Africa. New episodes will air every Sunday at 3 PM on MTV Base. For those who missed the premiere, the inaugural episode of the Room of Safety is available to view on MTN’s YouTube channel.

“With children increasingly interacting with AI chatbots and virtual companions, risks such as data collection, emotional dependence, and exposure to harmful content are rising. It’s crucial to educate children on how to engage with these tools responsibly, which is why internet safety is so important,” their YouTube description emphasised.

This isn’t the first initiative to educate the public—local shows have successfully collaborated with international platforms. Notably, the Open Chats Podcast secured a regular slot on the South African Broadcasting Corporation 2 (SABC 2) after winning the ‘Best Podcast of the Year’ title at the South African Social Media Awards (SASMAs). The podcast has resonated with audiences, encouraging discussions on various topics among young people.

Hosts Mthokozisi’ Mtho’ Methula and Sinothando’ Sino’ Kama have garnered over 260,000 YouTube subscribers. Open Chats Podcast premiered on Wednesday, April 9, at 5:30 PM.

The hosts reflected on their podcasting journey compared to traditional media, noting that the unscripted format allows for greater freedom of expression, enabling individuals to voice their thoughts freely.
