Safaricom Ethiopia Launches 4G Expansion With A Focus On Community Support

Safaricom Ethiopia is making strides in advancing digital connectivity alongside community welfare. The official relaunch of its 4G network in Arbaminch City marks a significant milestone in its national expansion efforts.

This 4G rollout not only aims to bolster digital infrastructure in the Gamo Zone but also underscores the company’s commitment to social responsibility through a collaboration with Mary Joy Ethiopia, a renowned NGO dedicated to assisting vulnerable women and children.

During the relaunch event, Safaricom Ethiopia’s Wim Vanhelleputte emphasised the company’s dual mission. “Together, we are building more than just a network; we are fostering community resilience, opportunities, and hope,” he stated.

As part of its community outreach, Safaricom Ethiopia contributed approximately $9,000 to support a newly established elderly care centre operated by Mary Joy Ethiopia. This facility serves as a refuge for homeless seniors and orphaned children, many of whom have been orphaned due to HIV and other tragic circumstances.

The funds will help provide vital resources, including mattresses and nutritious meals, to restore dignity and stability for those in distress.

The ceremony brought together key figures in the region, such as Demissie Admasu, chief administrator of the Gamo Zone, and Sister Zebider Zewdie, the founder and executive director of Mary Joy Ethiopia. Both leaders were recognised for their dedication to enhancing social welfare in the area.

This initiative aligns with Safaricom Ethiopia’s recent performance report for the financial year ending March 2025, which showcased a remarkable 270% revenue increase and extended 4G coverage to nearly half the population.

Vanhelleputte reaffirmed that Safaricom Ethiopia is committed to balancing rapid growth in commercial operations with meaningful community investments. “From providing laptops and internet access to schools in Metu to offering aid in disaster-affected regions like Afar and Gofa, we are evolving into a development partner rather than merely a telecom provider,” he added.
