CGTN-Africa Boosts Continental Reach with Increased Investment

March 24, 2025

CGTN-Africa) is significantly increasing its resources to expand coverage across all five regions of Africa. This strategic investment aims to provide more in-depth reporting, offering a comprehensive view of the continent while highlighting African perspectives and strengthening the relationship between China and Africa.

At a recent press conference in Beijing, Cao Ri, CGTN’s Deputy Editor-in-Chief and Deputy Director of the English Center discussed the network’s commitment to delivering a balanced and comprehensive portrayal of Africa. He emphasized CGTN-Africa’s pivotal role in enhancing Sino-African relations and improving mutual understanding.

Senior executives from CGTN-Africa were also present, including Shen Xiaomeng, Deputy Director of the Planning Department; Li Bin, Deputy Director of the Cultural Programs Department; Liao Liang, Deputy Director of the TV News Editing Department; Zhang Jingwen, Deputy Director of the New Media Editing Department; Guan Xin, Chief Editor of the Financial Programs Department; Xi Jia, Chief Editor of the Interview Department; Zhang He, Deputy Producer of the International Liaison Group; and Ren Yan, Chief Editor of the Exchange and Commentary Department.
Since its rebranding from CCTV-Africa to CGTN-Africa in 2016, the network has been crucial in elevating underreported economic and investment stories across the continent. CGTN-Africa has become a platform for diverse African viewpoints, allowing a deeper exploration of the continent’s economic dynamics and growth potential.

Mr. Cao noted that the rapidly evolving media landscape, shaped by new technologies and social media, presents both challenges and opportunities for traditional television channels. The rise of social media has democratized reporting, enabling anyone to act as a journalist, which complicates the media environment. Additionally, technological advancements, including artificial intelligence, have raised questions about content authenticity and production methods’ future.

To stay ahead, CGTN-Africa is expanding its platforms beyond traditional media to embrace new technology, ensuring it remains relevant in this digital age. With its operational base in Nairobi, CGTN-Africa is committed to reshaping China’s global image while providing a powerful voice for Africa on the world stage.

This investment surge comes as China deepens its economic and diplomatic engagement with Africa, aiming to foster long-term cooperation and development.
