Effective content preservation and archiving have never been more critical in the ever-evolving digital broadcasting landscape. As broadcasters and media organisations across East Africa continue to embrace digital platforms, ensuring the long-term sustainability, accessibility, and integrity of their content becomes a pressing priority.

At the upcoming Broadcast And Digital Media Convention – East Africa 2025, scheduled for 27 – 28 May 2025 at the Four Points by Sheraton – Kampala, Uganda, industry leaders, policymakers, and technologists will gather to discuss the strategies and technologies shaping the future of digital broadcasting. Hosted by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) and co-convened by Broadcast Media Africa (BMA) and Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC), the convention will place a spotlight on key areas, including the crucial role of content preservation and archiving in the digital ecosystem.

Sessions at the convention will delve into emerging solutions such as cloud-based storage, blockchain verification for content authenticity, and advanced metadata tagging systems. These technologies offer broadcasters scalable, secure, and cost-effective options for managing their archives efficiently.

However, technology alone is not enough. As Benjamin Pius, CEO of Broadcast Media Africa, highlighted, “Sustainable content archiving demands a strategic combination of reliable infrastructure, skilled human capital, and supportive regulatory frameworks. East Africa’s broadcasters must invest in the hardware, software, policies, and training that ensure long-term content value.”
