Telecom Namibia Restores Satlink VSAT Service After Losing Connectivity For A Period

Telecom Namibia says it has restored the satellite feed for its Satlink VSAT platform after it lost connectivity in October following the failure of Intelsat’s IS-33e satellite.

In a statement issued on Monday, Telecom Namibia said the feed was fully restored as of January 19 after exploring various options with international partners over the past three months to get the feedback to full speed.

Telecom Namibia had secured backup satellite connectivity around three weeks after the IS-33e outage, albeit with limited capacity, which enabled it to restore services to 50% of its Satlink customer base.

Since then, the telco has obtained additional satellite capacity, and the infrastructure preparations have been completed.

Telecom Namibia said it will send technical teams to restore services to all remaining Satlink customers, with all restorations completed within six weeks.

The IS-33e high-throughput satellite (HTS) – which covered Europe, Africa, and the Middle East – experienced a permanent power failure on October 19 and broke up shortly afterwards.

Intelsat declared the satellite a total loss on October 21. The cause of the failure is still under investigation.
