BMA Feature: Zimbabwe’s Geo Pomona Facility Showcases Waste-To-Energy Transformation To African Union Delegates

HARARE, ZIMBABWE – The Geo Pomona waste disposal plant in Harare has drawn considerable interest from African Union delegates for its unique ability to generate green power and jobs from rubbish. Delegates at Africa Skills Week 2026 observed this project, which shows how sustainable recycling efforts can build regional industries.

What used to be a mess of burning rubbish dumps filled with smoke and bad smells is now fully operational. The old rubbish was isolated with protective membranes, and more than 100 people who lived at the dump were either relocated or found jobs there.

Videos show rubbish being sorted using modern conveyors, collection trucks being tracked with a real-time monitoring system, and the delegation touring the restored land, which now has a FIFA-standard football field.

“We have a sorting facility, the biggest sorting facility in Southern Africa, which can accept over 1,080 tonnes of garbage in a day,” said Dilesh Nguwaya, CEO of Geo Pomona. “We are currently building our waste-to-energy plant, which is going to generate 16 to 22 megawatts of energy to be added to the national grid.”

The development amazed visiting regional lawmakers, including Eswatini Member of Parliament Welcome Dlamini. “It would be very nice for this to happen in Eswatini, and for this great company, Pomona, to have an MoU with the Kingdom of Eswatini so we can help each other out,” Dlamini commented, stressing that the waste issues can be solved by collaborating as a region.
