Canal+ has launched Sport+, a free, registration-based sports service supported by advertising and integrated into its existing streaming app. The revival of the Sport+ brand, whose original television channel closed in 2015, signals a new approach to attracting sports audiences beyond traditional pay-TV subscriptions.
Rather than introducing a standalone application or announcing a new distribution agreement, Canal+ has positioned Sport+ as a free tier within its established platform. Built around a mobile-first feed of vertical sports videos, the service uses advertising as its revenue model while potentially creating an entry point for users who may later upgrade to paid sports packages.
The launch is fronted by Thomas Senecal, Canal+’s director of sports, alongside Eglantine Leclabart, the group’s global marketing director for pay-TV. However, the company has not published a list of sports rights available through Sport+, leaving it unclear whether the service will feature live events, highlights or other formats. There is currently no basis to conclude that premium live rights are moving to the free tier.
The launch has particular relevance for African media markets because of Canal+’s ownership of MultiChoice and its wider operations, including Canal+ Afrique and Showmax. Although the reported launch appears to be focused on France, rather than Africa, it offers an indication of how the group could approach audience acquisition and advertising-funded streaming. No African rollout has been confirmed.
For African broadcasters and streaming platforms, the model highlights the potential value of using free, short-form sports content to attract mobile audiences, build engagement and create advertising inventory alongside subscription products. Such a strategy could help operators reach viewers unwilling to commit to a full pay-TV package, while providing opportunities to convert free users into paying customers.
The commercial test will be whether Sport+ can generate meaningful advertising revenue without undermining the value of Canal+’s premium sports subscriptions. Its rights strategy, audience scale and eventual geographic reach will determine how significant the model becomes for the wider group.
