Egypt Regulator Extends Live Sports Broadcast Window For Angola Match

Egypt’s Supreme Council for Media Regulation has approved an exceptional extension to the permitted live sports broadcasting window, allowing satellite channels to continue coverage until 01:30 for the Egypt–Angola fixture.

The decision allows live coverage, post-match analysis and related programming to continue beyond the normal cut-off on Friday, 25 September, when Egypt faced Angola in the opening round of qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Kick-off was scheduled for 22:00.

The extension was approved following a recommendation from the Council’s sports media performance committee, chaired by Abdel Salam El-Naggar, vice-president of the State Council and a Council member. The decision was approved under Council chairman Khaled Abdel Aziz.

The measure is notable for its industry-wide application. Rather than granting an extension to an individual rights holder or broadcaster, the Council applied the revised transmission window across Egypt’s satellite television sector for the specific fixture.

This effectively gave satellite channels an additional three and a half hours of late-night live sports programming and associated advertising inventory, allowing broadcasters to adjust their schedules around one of the country’s major national sporting events.

The decision also highlights the Council’s role in managing broadcast output windows alongside its broader responsibilities for media and content regulation.

The extension comes as the regulator continues to enforce rules governing television programming, including recent action involving programmes accused of violating regulations on paid airtime. The latest decision demonstrates the regulator’s ability to adjust permitted broadcasting hours as well as impose restrictions.

For Egypt’s satellite broadcasters and advertisers, such decisions can have a direct impact on scheduling, live sports coverage, commercial inventory and audience engagement around major sporting events.
