Broadcast Media Africa (BMA) has officially launched a groundbreaking research survey titled “Creating and Producing Quality Local Content in Africa – Status, Challenges and Outlook.” The pan-African initiative aims to provide a deep-dive view of the media landscape in Africa, at a moment when audiences are increasingly seeking authentic African stories, but infrastructure, skills, and funding are increasingly constrained.
With local broadcasters, streaming platforms, linear broadcasters, and digital channels vying for local audiences, storytellers around the continent have never had more opportunities but also new deep-rooted issues. BMA’s study will provide a full picture of the ecosystem, assessing the current state of capital, production capacity, regulatory frameworks, and how new technology such as artificial intelligence, cloud production and virtual workflows will affect the ecosystem.
Mr Benjamin Pius, the CEO of Broadcast Media Africa, said the demand for culturally relevant African content has never been greater, but they needed to understand the challenges in their systems before they could build a sustainable and commercially viable creative economy. The findings from this survey will provide the data-driven intelligence necessary to fill the funding, technology adoption, and distribution gaps, ultimately helping stakeholders realise creative potential into long-term commercial success.
The survey covers stakeholders across North, West, Central, East, and Southern Africa to ensure a balanced continental perspective. It targets professionals across the entire content value chain, including public and commercial broadcasters, OTT platforms, independent producers, animation studios, government regulators, telecom operators, ad agencies, and technology solution providers.
By analysing local content quotas, production incentives, intellectual property protections, and workforce development priorities, the study will generate crucial benchmark data to guide future investment and policy decisions.
