Empowering Through Transparency: TikTok’s New Initiatives For AI Literacy And Spam Reduction In Sub-Saharan Africa

TikTok has unveiled a range of new measures to bolster transparency about AI-generated content, combat AI spam and bolster AI literacy in sub-Saharan Africa. It is one of TikTok’s biggest initiatives in the area so far.

The news of the new measures was shared at the AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva. They feature sophisticated detection technologies to block and reduce spam content generated by AI, the launch of an in-app AI Literacy Hub in South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya, and efforts to build partnerships with local organisations to deliver culturally adapted AI education.

Since TikTok’s launch of the innovative Content Credentials, creator disclosures, and invisible watermarking features, the platform has already flagged more than 3 billion AI-generated videos. The platform has also become a member of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), where it will work alongside industry leaders to establish norms for authenticity of content around the globe.

TikTok also wants to encourage the use of technologies that will allow for more transparency around AI-generated content throughout the digital world, as a key part of Content Credentials.

TikTok’s AI lead for global public policy, Tom Varghese, underscored the company’s dedication to boosting user trust and control. We want users to feel in control of their experiences with AI on TikTok, have confidence, and have context for the content they encounter. Investing in technology, partnerships and education allows us to enable users to understand how users can use these tools creatively and responsibly, who created the content, and how to identify it as AI-generated.

The platform’s main thrust is also to fight against AI spam. TikTok has deleted more than 86 million fake accounts during the first quarter of 2026. The new AI detection systems will be used to prevent accounts from generating large volumes of spam and to safeguard original creators and content.

Education continues to be a cornerstone of TikTok’s approach. The goal of the AI Literacy Hub is to offer tools and information that enable users to detect AI-generated content and comprehend the implications. TikTok has pledged over US$4 million and collaborated with various institutions, including Moxi Africa, Africa Check, the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development, the Paradigm Initiative, Eveminet, and Mtoto News, since the launch of its AI Literacy Fund.

The partnerships have been successful in collecting more than 200 million views for valuable AI education information. In the future, TikTok will continue to foster creativity and prioritise transparency and safety in its AI efforts.
