KPop Demon Hunters Triumphs For Best Animated Film At Golden Globes

In an impressive display of creativity and talent, the animated film KPop Demon Hunters has clinched a Golden Globe award for Best Animated Feature. The film, now a Netflix sensation, tells the story of a girl band named Huntr/x, who harnesses the power of music to combat evil forces threatening the world. Additionally, its standout anthem, Golden, won the award for Best Original Song.

Since its debut in June, KPop Demon Hunters* has achieved remarkable success, resonating with audiences through its themes of empowerment, community, and self-acceptance. Director Maggie Kang emphasised the film’s commitment to showcasing strong female characters. “We wanted to depict women as we know them—strong and bold,” she stated. Co-director Chris Appelhans, who accepted the award alongside Kang, described the film as “a love letter to music,” highlighting its ability to connect people and foster a sense of shared humanity.

The film has struck a chord with fans, who have expressed how its uplifting messages about self-acceptance and battling inner demons have impacted their lives. The film’s breakout song, Golden, performed by singer-songwriter Ejae, took home the award for Best Original Song. During an emotional acceptance speech, she reflected on her own challenging journey to becoming a K-pop idol and dedicated the award to those who have faced rejection. Quoting her song lyrics, she declared, “It’s never too late to shine like you were born to be.” Ejae emphasised the importance of the song in helping others navigate their struggles and embrace their true selves.

KPop Demon Hunters has quickly established itself as an animated phenomenon, becoming Netflix’s most-watched film within just two months of its release. Its anthem, Golden, rose to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, while another track, Your Idol, also achieved significant chart success.

The Golden Globe wins follow earlier accolades, including Best Animated Feature and Best Song at the Critics’ Choice Awards. Ejae shared her excitement about the film’s success, likening the experience to “surfing for the first time” and describing it as surreal.

Arden Cho, the Korean-American actress who voices the lead character Rumi, reflected on her personal journey, aligning it with Rumi’s struggles. “I can honestly say that at different points in my life, I hated a lot of myself,” she admitted, adding that the film serves as a tribute to underrepresented communities, bringing hope and joy.

The recognition at the Golden Globes, often seen as a precursor to the Academy Awards, has generated Oscar buzz for KPop Demon Hunters. The film is among 35 features eligible for the animated category at this year’s Oscars, though the shortlist has yet to be revealed.
