Animated Film ‘David’ Set For General Release In South Africa On December 19

South Africa is poised for a significant breakthrough in the global film industry, not through a sci-fi blockbuster or a gritty drama, but with an inspiring animated film, “David.” This highly anticipated retelling of the biblical underdog story has generated considerable buzz ahead of its official release on December 19. With over 4 million views on its teaser and an impressive US$4.5 million in pre-sales, it is capturing the attention of audiences worldwide. It is positioned to be one of the standout South African films in recent years.

In recent times, South Africa has showcased several animated films, including “Kizazi Moto,” released in 2023, featuring radio personality Carol Ofori and prominent media figure Pearl Thusi. The themes of these films resonate with global audiences, reflecting a universal appeal.

The creative team behind “David” aims not just to present a historical narrative but also to encompass timeless messages of faith, courage, and inspiration that transcend cultures. One of the creators shared that the intention is to rekindle families’ joy of cinema, evoke the excitement of epic storytelling, and spark emotional connections through biblical narratives. The film’s visuals—the sweeping landscapes and high-quality animation—are reminiscent of blockbuster productions, contributing to a feeling of richly crafted, emotionally resonant storytelling for viewers who have experienced the teaser.

“David” is gaining global traction, thanks in large part to its partnership with Angel Studios, a U.S. distributor renowned for elevating faith-based content. Angel Studios previously achieved remarkable success with “The King of Kings,” which boasted the highest opening weekend for any biblical animation in U.S. history. Their approach to film financing breaks from traditional norms by empowering everyday fans through the Angel Guild, enabling them to have a say in which projects move into development and distribution.

In addition to its box-office goals, Angel Studios has a heartwarming initiative to ensure that 1 million children can see “David” for free. Through this crowdfunded program, supporters can sponsor cinema tickets for young viewers, including South African children who might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience the film in theatres.

“David” isn’t the only animated feature generating excitement for late 2025, as another popular film was released in October and has also drawn praise from fans for its relatable themes.
