YouTube Tightens Live Streaming Access: Minimum Age Increased To 16 As From July 2025

As of July 22, 2025, YouTube announced that it will increase the minimum age for independent live streaming on its platform from 13 to 16 as part of a broader initiative to enhance protections for younger users.

This adjustment reflects the platform’s continued commitment to providing a safer digital environment for minors, particularly as live broadcasting becomes increasingly popular among teenagers. Under the new rules, users aged 13 to 15 will no longer be able to livestream unless they are supervised by an adult who has been designated as a channel manager or editor. Full access to streaming features will now be reserved for those aged 16 and above.

The move builds on YouTube’s existing child safety measures and is intended to reduce the risk of inappropriate interactions, exploitation, or misuse of streaming functionalities. By introducing a higher age threshold, YouTube aims to align its practices with emerging standards around digital well-being for under-18s.

To support the new age-related changes, YouTube has issued updated guidance aimed at both parents and young content creators. The recommendations include appointing trusted adults to act as co-managers or owners of a child’s channel, encouraging families to become familiar with the platform’s safety and privacy policies, and promoting digital literacy to foster responsible content sharing among younger users.

In tandem with these safety enhancements, YouTube is also piloting new tools and features designed to enhance the user experience while maintaining platform integrity. The company has signalled that this is part of a wider strategy to adapt its policies to the growing presence of younger audiences online.

By raising the bar for live streaming eligibility, YouTube is reaffirming its role in fostering a secure online community—one that encourages creativity, but not at the expense of child protection. These changes serve as a timely reminder for parents and guardians to remain actively involved in how their children engage with online platforms, especially in the realm of real-time content creation.
