Streaming: MultiChoice Using Local Content To Outpace Global Rivals In The Game

A A

MultiChoice is gaining a competitive edge over international rivals like Netflix through its robust investment in local content, including sports, movies, and TV series. Recently, it announced the production of 2,763 hours of local content, boosting its library to 86,215 hours. Notable successes include Showmax Originals, which have garnered numerous accolades, such as “Spinners,” which won Best Foreign Series at the Shanghai TV Festival.

Sports significantly enhance MultiChoice’s offerings, with SuperSport recognised as a top sports broadcaster in South Africa. The company’s unparalleled coverage of local rugby, cricket, and soccer has contributed to impressive viewership growth, including a 17% increase during the ICC T20 Men’s World Cup, alongside the excitement of the Rugby Championship and the English Premier League.

SuperSport Schools’ app has reached 1 million users, doubling its base year-over-year and delivering over 35,000 hours of content. With initiatives like SuperSport Experiences, MultiChoice offers DStv Rewards subscribers exclusive event access, further solidifying its local engagement.

The company’s commitment to local storytelling is evident, as CEO Calvo Mawela emphasised the strategy of creating hyper-local content. By producing stories in various languages and cultures, MultiChoice enriches African narratives at a fraction of the cost compared to acquiring international content, which makes it uniquely positioned to thrive in the streaming landscape.
