“Here Are Three Key Ideas That Broadcasters Must Embrace Today!” – According To Hassan Saleh, MD Of Multichoice Uganda

Meet Hassan Saleh, Managing Director of MultiChoice Uganda – a spotlight speaker representing Multichoice Uganda at the upcoming East Africa Broadcasters Convention 2025 on 27- 28 May 2025 at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel in Kampala, Uganda.

Following the Convention, we at Broadcast Media Africa chatted with Hassan to discuss his motivations and hopes for the industry in an ever-changing ecosystem.

On the Convention’s purpose, Hassan said, “For us at MultiChoice Uganda, this Convention is important because we are passionate about the future of storytelling and content creation in Africa. We believe in the power of collaboration, and this forum brings together the people shaping how our industry grows, adapts, and thrives.”

“So as Africa’s most-loved storyteller, we stand for using content and innovation to enrich lives and open opportunities, especially for Africa’s youthful talent. Through platforms like Pearl Magic, Pearl Magic Prime, and Showmax, we’ve seen firsthand the value of investing in local stories. This event is a great opportunity to share our lessons and learn from others doing impactful work across the region.”

Hassan highlighted three key areas of innovation that he hopes broadcasters will embrace. First, it blends linear and streaming platforms, as MultiChoice has done with DStv, GOtv Stream, and Showmax, to serve both traditional and digital-first audiences. Secondly, advancing regional co-productions, like Cheza, a MultiChoice Talent Factory project by alumni from Uganda, Ethiopia, and Kenya that won Best Student Feature Film at the Kalasha Awards. Lastly, adopting new-age technologies like AI, virtual reality, augmented reality, and cloud-based workflows to streamline operations, spark creativity, cut costs, and stay relevant.

Addressing the industry’s biggest challenges, Hassan pointed to digital disruption, limited infrastructure (especially in rural areas), piracy’s damage to revenues and investment, and the ongoing need to sustainably fund high-quality African storytelling.

Looking ahead to the Convention, Hassan said: “I hope everyone walks away with practical ideas to bring back to their teams and a stronger sense of community. The future of African broadcasting should be more collaborative — this Convention shows the power of sharing, listening, and innovating together. Above all, I hope it reignites our collective commitment to telling African stories with boldness, authenticity, and pride.”

We are thrilled to welcome Hassan Saleh live at the Broadcasters Convention in Kampala, Uganda.
