MTN Set To Unveil New Pan-African Streaming Service

According to news reaching us at the BMA, MTN Group is set to launch a new content streaming platform in Africa to challenge established market giants such as Netflix and Showmax. We understand the streaming platform is being developed in collaboration with Synamedia, but specific details about the service remain sparse.

However, on Monday, in a statement, MTN said, “The service will utilise Synamedia’s cloud-based solutions to distribute linear TV and video-on-demand content. It will also pilot monetisation models, including subscriptions, ad-supported content, and free streaming channels with targeted advertising”.

According to MTN sources, the new offering is expected to bring groundbreaking consumer benefits, and MTN is convinced it will open up fresh revenue streams. The proposition is believed to expand digital content availability and offer diverse viewing options that cater to the changing appetites of consumers across the continent.

Further, each additional market the service enters will possess a tailored content strategy that embraces local cultures, languages, and viewing habits to remain relevant and have high uptake across Africa.

Details on the platform’s content, commercial launch date, and pricing are not publicly available. However, BMA believes that the MTN leadership will be holding a media/press day on Tuesday, 08th April 2025, during which additional details regarding the partnership are expected to be disclosed.
