MultiChoice’s Showmax Raises Prices But Spares Premier League Broadcasts

MultiChoice has hiked the prices of its streaming service Showmax, following its relaunch with Comcast’s NBCUniversal six months ago. However, the subscription fee for Showmax Premier League remains unchanged at US$3.81 per month, offering access to every match of the 2024/25 Premier League season.

The company is relying on the popularity of the English Premier League in Africa to attract more subscribers to the Showmax platform. Marc Jury, the CEO of Showmax, expressed his enthusiasm for the return of the Premier League and highlighted the platform’s commitment to keeping its content affordable and easily accessible for football fans in Africa.

Additionally, Showmax Entertainment will return to its original price of US$5.46 per month, which was the launch price in 2015. Showmax Entertainment Mobile will be priced at US$2.48, positioning it as one of the most cost-effective mobile streaming options globally.

Moreover, MultiChoice is optimistic about the Showmax platform as its DStv service faces declining subscribers. The company recently revealed a 9% drop in overall active subscribers, attributing the trend to competition from global streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime.

Despite these challenges, MultiChoice considers the past year a turning point for Showmax. The platform’s relaunch across 44 markets in Sub-Saharan Africa on Peacock’s platform was a resounding success. The migration to the new Showmax platform saw almost 100% of eligible customers making the switch, with an 88% reactivation rate in the seven weeks following the migration, demonstrating the effectiveness of our strategic decisions.

In conclusion, this move by MultiChoice reflects our unwavering commitment to positioning Showmax as a competitive player in the streaming industry, particularly in the African market. We are optimistic about the future and look forward to the continued success of Showmax.
