BMA Launches Survey to Assess Africa’s Media Production Infrastructure Readiness

Broadcast Media Africa (BMA) has launched the Media Production Infrastructure in Africa – Status Survey, a new industry initiative designed to establish a clearer picture of the continent’s production capabilities, infrastructure gaps and readiness for the future of media.

As demand for African content continues to grow across television, streaming, digital platforms and other distribution channels, the ability to produce, manage and deliver content efficiently is becoming increasingly important. The survey seeks to determine whether Africa’s existing production infrastructure is keeping pace with this rapidly changing media environment.

The study will assess the availability, condition, utilisation and modernisation of production infrastructure across African markets, covering studios, outside broadcast facilities, production equipment, post-production systems, storage, content management platforms and other critical production environments.

Importantly, the survey will also examine the adoption of technologies reshaping modern media production, including IP-based workflows, cloud production, remote production, virtual production and AI-enabled production processes.

Beyond technology adoption, the research will investigate the practical challenges influencing infrastructure development, including investment levels, skills availability, operational capacity, technology access and the transition from traditional facilities to software-defined and hybrid production environments.

The survey is targeting a broad cross-section of the African media ecosystem, including public and commercial broadcasters, radio broadcasters, pay-TV operators, news organisations, production and creative studios, technology companies, systems integrators, equipment suppliers, post-production providers, OB companies and cloud technology providers.

A key objective of the initiative is to establish an industry baseline for media production infrastructure in Africa. By capturing information directly from organisations operating across the production value chain, the survey will help identify where infrastructure is advancing, where significant gaps remain and where investment and modernisation may be required.

The findings are expected to provide valuable intelligence for broadcasters, content producers, technology providers, investors and other industry stakeholders seeking to understand the continent’s production readiness and the infrastructure requirements of an increasingly digital, multi-platform and on-demand media environment.

For BMA, the survey represents an important step towards building a more informed view of Africa’s media production landscape. Its findings will help highlight the infrastructure priorities that could shape the next generation of content production and delivery across the continent.
