MultiChoice has consolidated three of its local entertainment services into a single channel, Wethu+, as part of its latest DStv package and channel restructuring.
Effective 17 September, Wethu+ replaced Mzansi Wethu on DStv channel 163, bringing together programming previously carried across Mzansi Wethu, local film channel Mzansi Bioskop and Mzansi Magic Music.
The move follows MultiChoice’s channel rationalisation plans announced in August and coincides with a broader restructuring of DStv packages and services.
Wethu+ combines a mix of telenovelas, drama, local feature films, children’s and educational content. Its daytime schedule also includes Woza Matrics, a matric revision programme, while the channel will carry two live Premier Soccer League matches each weekend during the football season.
A key element of the change is the channel’s distribution across DStv’s package structure. Wethu+ is available from the DStv Starter package upwards, with only EasyView excluded. This places local film, entertainment and selected live top-flight football within reach of a broader base of DStv subscribers.
The consolidation reflects a wider shift in how MultiChoice is managing its channel portfolio, with fewer standalone services carrying a broader mix of content. Rather than maintaining separate channels for individual genres or audiences, the operator is concentrating local entertainment, film, music and selected sports programming within a unified service.
For content producers, advertisers and broadcasters operating within the DStv ecosystem, the move highlights the growing importance of channel efficiency, content aggregation and value-driven packaging as pay-TV operators respond to changing audience behaviour and market pressures.
