Mozambique’s telecommunications operator Tmcel has begun testing the potential use of Angola’s ANGOSAT-2 satellite to support telecommunications services in Mozambique.
The testing is a further step in implementing cooperation agreements signed between Angola and Mozambique in June 2026, on the sidelines of the 5th National Communications Conference in Maputo. The agreements aim to strengthen collaboration in telecommunications, broadcasting, and satellite communications.
Tmcel’s move into the testing phase follows successful trials by Televisão de Moçambique (TVM), which conducted a Proof of Concept to assess the transmission of its television signal via ANGOSAT-2.
Following the positive outcome of the TVM trials, the broadcaster and relevant stakeholders are now preparing to advance discussions towards a commercial agreement. The proposed partnership would allow Mozambique’s public television signal to be distributed nationwide using ANGOSAT-2’s satellite infrastructure.
The start of Tmcel’s tests further strengthens ANGOSAT-2’s growing footprint in Africa and demonstrates the potential of Angola’s satellite infrastructure to support connectivity, telecommunications and broadcasting services beyond its domestic market.
The Angola–Mozambique cooperation also forms part of a wider regional strategy to expand the use of ANGOSAT-2 services across Africa. By leveraging available satellite capacity, the initiative aims to deliver practical communications and connectivity solutions to operators and broadcasters across the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
As demand for reliable connectivity and resilient communications infrastructure continues to grow across the region, ANGOSAT-2 is positioned to play an increasingly important role in supporting Africa’s evolving digital and media ecosystem.
