A significant milestone in Kenyan sports media was celebrated at Diamond Plaza in Nairobi with the official launch of SportyFM Kenya, the country’s inaugural 2-country sports-only radio station. After 234 days of test broadcasting, the station promises to highlight a diverse array of sports, including those that often go unnoticed.

With the slogan “Beyond Sport,” Sporty FM Kenya aims to delve into the culture, emotions, and societal discussions surrounding sports, moving beyond mere scores and statistics.

Spearheaded by the well-known Kenyan sports media figure Carol Radull, who serves as the Managing Director, the station is part of a larger initiative by the Sporty Group to expand across Africa. Currently, SportyFM Kenya is accessible in four major cities: Nairobi (105.0 FM), Mombasa (97.3 FM), Nakuru (103.9 FM), and Kisumu (106.6 FM), and listeners can also tune in online.

During the launch event, Radull expressed the station’s ambition to reach over 3 million listeners and to extend its nationwide reach by year’s end.

The program features a mix of experienced sports journalists, including Peter Kirumba, Joe Saina, and Diamond Okusimba, alongside rising talents like Hesbon Nyamari and Hilda Cheptoo.

Notable attendees at the launch included Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, Webuye East MP Daniel Wanyama, and Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris. Former ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo and prominent sports figures, including Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Vice President McDonald Mariga and footballer Victor Wanyama, also marked the occasion. Marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge sent a video message praising the station’s mission to station’s Kenyan talent and promote accountability in sports leadership.

SportyFM Kenya joins its sister station, SportyTV, which broadcasts as a free-to-air TV channel nationwide via PANG and Signet.

Program Highlights
The station features a diverse lineup, starting with its flagship morning show, The Kick-Off, hosted by Joe Saina and Nicolette White from 6 am to 9 am, setting the day’s sports agenda with essential news and fan engagement.

The midday show, Power Play, energises listeners with a variety of sports coverage, including Formula 1, boxing, and MMA. For the afternoon drive-time, Sporty Express (3 pm-7 pm), hosted by Louis Muhana and Peter Kirumba, offers lively discussions on trending sports topics, mixed with music and live updates.

On weekends, listeners can catch Extra Time, hosted by David Nyaash and Greg Mulemi, which provides an in-depth recap of the week’s global sports.
