Airtel Reaches New Heights: Surpassing 650 Million Customers And Expanding Digital Connectivity

April 3, 2026

A A

Airtel has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the world’s second-largest telecom operator, surpassing 650 million global customers across its operations.

With a strong presence in both Africa (through Airtel Africa) and India (via Bharti Airtel), this achievement underscores the company’s dedication to providing mobile and internet connectivity. It highlights Airtel’s ongoing efforts to expand its digital services and infrastructure.

In response to this development, Gopal Vittal, Executive Vice Chairman at Bharti Airtel, emphasised that reaching this milestone entails a greater responsibility to continuously enhance customer service. He stated that Airtel is committed to elevating innovation, reliability, and the overall customer experience, seeing every interaction as an opportunity to build trust and add value.

Airtel Africa has recently appointed Gopal Vittal as the new chairman, succeeding Sunil Mittal after seven years in the role.

Airtel has also introduced a cutting-edge, AI-powered Spam Alert Service to improve the customer experience. This service detects and flags fraudulent SMS messages in real time, a “state-of-the-art technology” Gopal described as designed to ensure a safer network.

In the first six months since its launch (as of September 2025), the service successfully identified over 205 million spam messages, significantly reducing spam occurrences in Nigeria and operating across 13 of Airtel’s markets in Africa.

The extensive customer base of 650 million spans various Airtel services across India and Africa, including mobile, data, and Airtel Money.

In Africa alone, Airtel boasts 179 million telecom subscribers across 14 markets, offering mobile voice, data, and international roaming services. Central to its offerings in the region is Airtel Money, which is accessible via Smartcash PSB. The service promotes financial inclusion, serving over 52 million customers and enabling banking and instant payment solutions for individuals who were previously unbanked.

The mobile money segment has shown impressive growth, accounting for 21.1% of Airtel Africa’s total revenue. The total processed value during Q3 ’25 (covering October to December’ 25) exceeded US$200 billion, marking a 36% increase to over US$210 billion.

In India, Airtel serves 368 million mobile customers, provides high-speed internet to over 13 million homes, and offers Digital TV services to more than 15 million customers.

Airtel Business offers a range of enterprise solutions, including Airtel IQ, cybersecurity, SD-WAN, cloud services, managed solutions, and IoT, supported by an extensive network of over 400,000 kilometres of subsea fibre and Nxtra’s eco-friendly data centres.

Additionally, Airtel is addressing the digital divide by exploring satellite-to-cell services. The company has partnered with Eutelsat, OneWeb, and SpaceX to leverage their low-earth-orbit satellites to deliver high-speed internet access.
