Lola Shoneyin’s acclaimed novel, “The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives,” is set to hit cinemas in December, sparking high expectations among fans and film enthusiasts alike.

Shoneyin shared her excitement through a post on Facebook, stating:

“I’m thrilled to collaborate with @ebonylifestudios, my sister @moabudu, @heidiwena, and director @danieloriahi for the film adaptation of The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives. The cast is truly remarkable, and I can’t wait for the magic to unfold!”

The story revolves around Baba Segi, his four wives, and their seven children, exploring a secret that challenges their entire understanding of power dynamics, masculinity, and femininity. Its rich narrative delves into themes such as polygamy, rivalry, sexuality, mental health, and the experiences of African women in their society.

Produced by Mo Abudu’s EbonyLife Group in collaboration with Genesis Group, Nile Media Entertainment Group, and Silverbird Group, this project represents a significant partnership among major African film and media entities.

The film will be directed by Daniel Oriahi, based on an adaptation by Adze Ugah. Key producers include Heidi Uys, Chris Odeh, Mimi Bartels, and Shoneyin herself, with executive producers Abudu, Nnaeto Orazulike, Moses Babatope, and Guy Murray-Bruce. Temidayo Makanjuola has taken the role of Head of Production Design, while Yolanda Okereke is leading the wardrobe department.

The cast boasts an impressive lineup, with Odunlade Adekola portraying Baba Segi, joined by Iyabo Ojo, Mercy Aigbe, Bimbo Ademoye, and Omowunmi Dada. The supporting cast features notable names like Shaffy Bello, Bisola Aiyeola, Lateef Adedimeji, Kunle Remi, and many more.

Expressing her anticipation for returning to cinema after a five-year gap, Abudu remarked, “The adaptation of Shoneyin’s powerful narrative, backed by strong partnerships with Genesis, Nile, and Silverbird, alongside our phenomenal cast, underscores the grandeur of this project. ‘The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives’ will hit theatres globally this December.”

Nnaeto Orazulike, Managing Director of Genesis Group, noted, “This film marks a pivotal moment for African cinema. It showcases the growth of the industry as we transform a powerful literary work into film at such a grand scale, signalling our global future.”

Moses Babatope, CEO of the Nile Group, emphasised, “This is exactly the kind of story that deserves an international audience. The collaboration and scale of this project are unprecedented, and we’re excited for viewers globally to experience something truly remarkable this Christmas.”

Guy Murray-Bruce, President of Silverbird Group, added, “We are proud to contribute to a project that uplifts African storytelling, bringing a globally significant narrative to both local and international audiences.”
