Report: Broadcast Content Delivery In Africa – Hybrid Model Dominates — A New Broadcast Media Africa Survey Finds

Broadcast Media Africa (BMA) has released its 2025 Content Delivery Platforms & Services in Africa survey, revealing a clear industry shift toward hybrid distribution models that combine satellite and fibre technologies to deliver content more efficiently across the continent.

According to the report, 54 per cent of broadcasters and media platforms are now using hybrid systems—an intentional strategy to balance satellite’s wide reach with fibre’s reliability and high performance. The study gathered responses from Southern, West, East, and Central Africa, highlighting how this “best of both worlds” approach is becoming the backbone of Africa’s modern broadcasting ecosystem.

“The data shows that Africa’s broadcasters are not simply adopting new technologies—they’re building systems that balance resilience, reach, and reliability,” said Benjamin Pius, CEO of Broadcast Media Africa. “Hybrid delivery is not a temporary solution; it’s a strategic response to the continent’s diverse markets and evolving audience needs.”

Fibre is increasingly considered the foundation for next-generation content delivery, supporting high-quality services such as UHD broadcasting, cloud-based workflows, and interactive platforms. Satellite, however, continues to play a vital role in connecting remote and underserved areas, ensuring inclusive access to information and entertainment.

While satisfaction levels with current systems are high—74 per cent of organisations reported positive experiences—the report identifies ongoing challenges, including complex vendor management, uneven service standards, and the need for greater staff training. The survey notes that these factors underscore the importance of adopting smarter orchestration tools and unified service frameworks.

Looking ahead, the report identifies 5G, AI-driven optimisation, and cloud distribution as the technologies most likely to shape Africa’s media networks over the next five years. It also calls for harmonised spectrum policies, improved cross-border cooperation, and stronger public-private partnerships to sustain infrastructure growth.

“The opportunity now lies in combining fibre’s scalability, satellite’s reach, and the innovation of 5G and AI to build a truly future-ready media ecosystem,” Pius added.
