Tamer El Mahdi has been appointed as the new managing director of Telecom Egypt, succeeding Mohamed Nasr, who recently stepped down from his executive role and board position after leading the company since March 2023.

Along with Nasr’s departure, Mohamed Al Fowey, the vice president and chief technical officer, and Ahmed Hassan, the vice president and chief human resources officer, also decided to resign, which the company accepted.

El Mahdi will oversee the appointment of successors for these key positions, ensuring operational continuity and driving the company’s strategic initiatives.

With over three decades of experience in telecommunications, information technology, digital transformation, and non-banking financial services, El Mahdi brings a wealth of leadership experience from various multinational and investment firms. His previous roles include directing several telecommunications companies in North Africa, such as Orascom Telecom Media and Technology from 2014 to 2019, and Orascom Telecom Algeria (Djezzy), Algeria’s top mobile operator, from 2008 to 2013.

El Mahdi has also held senior positions at AT&T, where he managed extensive telecom infrastructure projects across the region. His academic credentials include an MBA in International Business Administration from the Maastricht School of Management, a Master’s in Project Management from George Washington University, a Master’s in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from California State University, and a Bachelor’s degree in the same engineering field from Cairo University.

Lobna Helal, chairperson of Telecom Egypt’s board of directors, expressed confidence in El Mahdi’s appointment, stating, “His proven track record and extensive expertise position him to guide Telecom Egypt through a transformative period of growth, optimising our resources and driving our ambitious strategy to enhance customer experience both locally and internationally, fulfilling the expectations of our shareholders and clients.”

Helal also recognised Nasr’s contributions during a challenging period for the company.

In his new role, El Mahdi stated, “I, along with my colleagues, am dedicated to fortifying Telecom Egypt’s status locally and regionally, while enhancing our services to align with the evolving needs and aspirations of our customers.”
