Google has made significant announcements regarding its investments in Africa’s digital landscape. The tech giant is committing US$9 million in new funding for universities and research institutions across the continent over the next year, building on the US$17 million previously allocated for local capacity development.
Among the initiatives unveiled is a new subsea cable hub in South Africa, one of four planned to enhance connectivity across the region. Additionally, Google offers free one-year subscriptions to Google AI Pro for college students in several countries, including Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe. This initiative enables students to utilise advanced AI tools, such as Deep Research and Gemini 2.5 Pro, to support their academic endeavours.
These latest efforts follow a US$1 billion investment in Africa that Google announced in 2022.
Alex Okosi, managing director for Google in Africa, stated, “The digital economy in Africa has tremendous potential, which will be realised through the talent and creativity of its youth. Today’s announcements—encompassing AI education, advanced resources for students, and enhanced connectivity—reflect a comprehensive investment in the continent’s positive growth trajectory. We are dedicated to providing the essential infrastructure, innovative tools, and financial backing to empower Africa’s young people to innovate, lead, and create a flourishing digital future.”
