As the world rapidly adapts to the technological revolution driven by artificial intelligence (AI), Africa’s broadcasters are stepping into the spotlight, ready to redefine the future of media on the continent. This vision takes centre stage at the Broadcasters Convention – Southern Africa 2025, to be held in Harare, Zimbabwe, and hosted by the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC). The Broadcasting Media Alliance (BMA) convened the convention in collaboration with the Southern African Broadcasting Association (SABA).
Under the powerful and timely theme, “Content, Connectivity, Collaboration – Transforming Africa’s Broadcast Media Landscape in the AI Era,” this year’s gathering signals a bold new chapter for African media focused on innovation, inclusion, and regional unity.
In the digital era, content is no longer just king — it’s smart, fast, and increasingly AI-driven. From AI-assisted newsrooms and automated editing suites to algorithms that analyse viewer behaviour and tailor programming in real time, artificial intelligence is transforming the way stories are told and consumed.
While Africa has made significant strides in digital expansion, millions remain on the margins of media access. Connectivity remains both a challenge and an opportunity, and this convention squarely addresses it.
Perhaps more than any other time in history, the success of Africa’s broadcasters now hinges on strategic collaboration. No single institution can navigate the rapidly evolving media landscape alone.
The Broadcasters Convention – Southern Africa 2025 is more than an event — it is a call to action. It calls on us to harness the power of artificial intelligence while staying rooted in African values, connect the unconnected, and build a future where media empowers every citizen, every culture, and every community.
With content, connectivity, and collaboration as guiding principles, the Southern African broadcast sector is not just adapting but leading. And as this convention makes clear, Africa’s media renaissance is already underway.
