MTN South Africa has unveiled a significant investment of US$12 million to improve network quality, expand connectivity, and upgrade infrastructure in the Eastern Cape.
This announcement follows previous investments of US$16 million and US$23 million in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, respectively.
According to the telecommunications company, the investment in the Eastern Cape will encompass the deployment of new base stations, alongside enhancements to operations, modernisation of sites, and capacity upgrades for over 250 existing locations.
“The US$12 million investment is part of our national initiative to boost digital capabilities, enhancing battery life, site security, and energy facilities, which includes ensuring the availability of generators,” stated Songezo Masiso, General Manager of MTN in the Eastern Cape.
Furthermore, MTN highlighted that these investments will reinforce its network’s quality, resilience, and performance across the province.
Currently, MTN boasts 98% 4G coverage in the Eastern Cape and 48% 5G coverage. The company aims to further enhance coverage, particularly in underserved rural areas. According to Masiso, communities such as Libode, Lusikisiki, Qumbu, and Duncan can expect improved network quality by the end of the year.
Recently, the Eastern Cape faced severe weather that caused significant damage to network infrastructure, including MTN.
In response, the telco has prioritised restoring services in the impacted regions to ensure that communities remain connected and can benefit from digital resources.
“Enhancing our network and making digital services more accessible are vital components of our Ambition 2025 strategy. This strategy aims to create the largest and most valuable platforms for driving sustainable growth,” Masiso concluded. “Our investment in Eastern Cape’s network infrastructure is essential for connecting the unconnected and promoting a more inclusive digital environment across South Africa.”
