Ethical Leadership In AI: Pope Leo XIV’s Call To Action At The 2025 AI For Good Summit

In a heartfelt message delivered on behalf of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, participants of the AI for Good Summit 2025 have been encouraged to prioritise ethical considerations in the development and management of artificial intelligence. The summit, organised by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in collaboration with other UN agencies and co-hosted by the Swiss Government, coincides with the 160th anniversary of the ITU’s foundation.

Pope Leo XIV lauded the ongoing efforts by ITU members and staff in promoting global cooperation that aims to enhance access to communication technologies for people around the world. He noted the pressing challenges that remain, particularly for approximately 2.6 billion individuals in rural and low-income areas who still lack access to such essential technologies.

“This era presents humanity with immense potential,” the Pope’s message stated, referencing the sweeping changes brought on by the digital revolution fueled by artificial intelligence. The transformation impacts numerous sectors, including education, healthcare, governance, and communication, prompting a need for discernment.

“As we embrace these advancements, we must remain committed to ensuring that AI serves the common good,” the Pope emphasised. He highlighted the importance of fostering dialogue and fraternity while ensuring technological innovations align with human values.

In his address, the Pope expressed concerns about AI’s capabilities. While these technologies can perform tasks with remarkable efficiency, they fall short in replicating essential human qualities such as moral judgement and genuine relationships. Consequently, he emphasised that technological progress must consider the ethical implications and responsibilities that accompany the evolution of AI.

The Pope further urged all stakeholders—developers, managers, and users—to share the responsibility of ensuring that ethical AI practices are implemented. This calls for regulatory frameworks that centre on human experiences, moving beyond mere practical or commercial metrics.

Pope Leo XIV concluded his message with a powerful reminder to remain focused on the collective goal of achieving what Saint Augustine referred to as “tranquillitas ordinis – the tranquillity of order.” He encouraged attendees to work towards promoting a more just and peaceful society conducive to human flourishing.

In closing, he expressed his hope for coordinated efforts in establishing global governance of AI, grounded in the recognition of human dignity and fundamental freedoms, assuring participants of his prayers for their dedication to the common good.

The AI for Good Summit 2025 represents a vital opportunity for leaders in technology and policy to come together and address the pressing ethical considerations tied to the rapid advancements in AI, reinforcing the need for responsibility as we navigate this new digital landscape.
