Spanish streaming service Movistar Plus+ has renewed its extensive content agreement with Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) for films and television series.

With this renewal, Movistar Plus+ will remain the exclusive Pay 1 platform in Spain, showcasing Sony Pictures films after their theatrical and home entertainment releases.

The lineup includes recent titles like 28 Years Later and new instalments of franchises I Know What You Did Last Summer and Karate Kid: Legends, as well as catalogue franchises such as Spider-Man, Ghostbusters, Jumanji, Men In Black, Bad Boys, Hotel Transylvania, The Da Vinci Code, Equalizer and individual classics such as Little Women, Whiplash and Call Me by Your Name.

In addition, the agreement will see the AXN channel included in Movistar Plus+’s linear TV offerings, along with the return of AXN Movies, focusing on blockbuster films.

AXN’s series lineup features popular shows like The Good Doctor, Criminal Minds, Chicago Fire, and S.W.A.T., alongside a library of over 100 series, including award-winning drama Damages and The Shield and exclusive Sony Pictures Television shows such as Twisted Metal, High Country, and Accused.

Mark Young, EVP of Distribution & Networks at Sony Pictures Television, expressed enthusiasm about extending their long-term partnership. “We are proud of our slate of feature films and television titles, and we’re excited for Spanish audiences to enjoy them post-theatrical release. Our AXN networks are thriving, and this partnership will continue to deliver quality programming throughout Spain,” he stated.

Daniel Domenjó, the newly appointed CEO of Movistar Plus+, emphasised the importance of the movie aspect of the renewal. “We strive to provide the best film offerings in Spain and to be the first platform to showcase major international titles. Renewing our partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment is a significant advancement in achieving this goal,” he remarked.

This renewal announcement comes shortly after Domenjó reassured the audience about the future of original films and TV shows on the platform, committing to keeping Movistar Plus+ as a “driving force” in supporting the local creative industry.
