Airtel Nigeria Deploys AI To Combat SMS Fraud, Flags Over 9.6 Million Spam Messages

Airtel Nigeria has announced that its AI-powered Spam Alert Service has detected over 9.6 million potential spam SMS messages from March 13 to May 20, 2025. The telecommunications provider revealed this information in a statement issued in Lagos, emphasising its commitment to enhancing customer safety and experience.

Launched in March 2025, the Spam Alert Service identified 9,667,008 messages as spam during its initial two months. The origin of these messages is noteworthy: 528,080 came from within Airtel’s network, while a staggering 9,138,928 were sourced from external networks, highlighting the significant spam threat posed by external parties.

Airtel Nigeria stated, “Our focus is on connecting Nigerians while ensuring their safety and confidence in using our services.” They are committed to developing intelligent systems that proactively identify and adapt to evolving threats. As digital communication becomes increasingly pervasive, protecting users from potential fraud is paramount.

The rise of SMS fraud, known as smishing, poses a serious challenge as cybercriminals exploit text messaging to deceive users. They often impersonate telecom operators or send counterfeit promotional messages to trick individuals into providing personal data or clicking harmful links.

According to the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), financial institutions in Nigeria faced significant losses due to fraud. Despite a decrease of 31% in reported fraud cases, the economic repercussions continue to escalate, showing a staggering rise in fraud-related losses in recent years. With the growing sophistication of threats, Airtel Nigeria remains dedicated to leading the industry in innovation and customer protection, ensuring a safer digital environment for all Nigerians.
