Kenya: Nation Media Award-Winning Journalism At AJEA Awards Offers Lessons For The Media Industry

A A

The Nation Media Group (NMG) dominated the Annual Journalism Excellence Awards (AJEA), scooping 11 out of 18 categories. Their work, from rigorous investigations to reporting on climate and gender, spoke of the richness and diversity of modern journalism at its finest.

More than the glamour of the awards, though, is the learning model. Here are some of the key takeaways for all journalists to learn from NMG’s show:

NMG’s success was not an isolated phenomenon—it was collective. The open camaraderie between colleagues at the awards revealed a common newsroom culture. Journalists craft more interesting stories and build a greater brand when they work together.

The mix of NMG’s print, TV, and online awards demonstrates the power of storytelling that transcends subjects and formats. Versatility is no longer a nicety; it is a necessity.

Their award-winning pieces embodied sound research and meticulous fact-checking. In an era of information overload, credibility is built on accuracy and depth.

Most of NMG’s news covered quotidian concerns—from food supply to women’s rights—giving voice to the voiceless. Good journalism ruffles feathers when it speaks and responds to society’s needs.

NMG’s award concerns journalistic ethics—equity, transparency, and accountability. Credibility is a journalist’s best ally in the modern age.

From technological innovation to storytelling methodology, NMG’s flexibility distinguished them. For reporters, ongoing development is paramount to staying relevant.

NMG’s success at AJEA 2024 is a win and a lesson. It proves that exceptional journalism is not the work of great stories but the work of people, values, and practices underlying those stories. To media practitioners everywhere, the message is evident: cooperate, innovate, and continue to raise the bar.
