The eighth instalment of the renowned spy series, ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,’ is set to make its premiere out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival on May 14. Both Tom Cruise and director-writer Christopher McQuarrie will attend the event. This marks Cruise’s third appearance at Cannes; his first was in 1992 with Ron Howard’s “Far and Away,” followed by “Top Gun: Maverick” in 2022. Cruise was awarded an honorary Palme d’Or during his previous visit and conducted a masterclass for festival-goers.

According to the Cannes press release, “In ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,’ Tom Cruise reprises his role as Ethan Hunt, a character he has embodied since the franchise’s inception in 1996. Alongside his IMF team, they urge the audience to trust them one final time. After nearly three decades of thrilling stunts and intrigue, ‘The Final Reckoning’ promises to deliver a remarkable cinematic experience.”

The film features a star-studded cast, including Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Henry Czerny, Mariela Garriga, and Angela Bassett. It is scheduled for theatrical release on May 21 in France and May 23 in the U.S., distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Rumours about the film’s Cannes debut first surfaced in February, hinting at a possible premiere at the prestigious festival.

This year’s Cannes Film Festival, which will take place from May 13 to 24, will announce its full lineup on Thursday. Other notable filmmakers expected to showcase their work include Spike Lee, Wes Anderson, Kristen Stewart, Jim Jarmusch, Ari Aster, and Richard Linklater.
