Ethio Telecom And Siinqee Bank Enhance Smartphone Access and Services

Ethio Telecom has partnered with Siinqee Bank to significantly enhance smartphone accessibility across Ethiopia. The company aims to provide two million smartphones annually through long-term payment plans. This initiative is part of Ethio Telecom’s strategy to improve digital inclusion and bridge the digital divide, particularly in rural areas where cell phones are often the primary means of communication.

CEO Frehiwot Tamiru highlighted the project’s importance, stating that the $70 million annual budget is aimed at supporting low-income individuals who have previously faced barriers to accessing digital services. The smartphones will be affordable through manageable instalment plans, expanding access to the digital economy for many Ethiopians.

Additionally, the partnership will leverage Ethio Telecom’s successful digital payment platform, Telebirr, which has over 52.5 million subscribers, to launch new digital financial services. These services allow citizens to access savings accounts, microcredit, and salary loans online, including interest-free and interest-bearing options.

Tamiru emphasised the commitment to fostering an inclusive digital ecosystem, stating, “We are dedicated to introducing innovative financial services that enhance lifestyles and support economic growth.” This collaboration addresses the need for technology in the financial sector and aims to empower underserved communities, marking a significant step towards Ethiopia’s digital and economic inclusion.
