During the 4th OTT Streaming Summit, held in Cape Town, South Africa, in February 2024, Stanley .B. Similo, President of SABA, gave an overview of where the SABA TV Project is.

Mr Similo highlights that SABA has embarked on an ambitious journey to establish a robust business case for its operations, laying the groundwork through strategic planning and collaborative efforts among its members. Despite initial optimism, SABA faced significant challenges as it sought to operationalise its vision, requiring a shift in approach and focus.

Some of the Key Challenges Mr Similo highlights:

  • Commercial Viability: Without anticipated government support, SABA needed to pivot toward a financially sustainable model, emphasising revenue generation and cost-efficiency.
  • Technology Infrastructure: Ensuring region-wide signal availability posed a significant technological challenge. To address this gap, SABA explored cloud-based solutions and engaged partners like Sentech, UAT, and Angoset.

SABA boasts a remarkable archive of approximately 400,000 hours of material, a key asset in its business case. However, the organisation recognises the urgency of ensuring this content remains relevant in a fast-changing media landscape. Timely utilisation and adaptation to audience needs are crucial to maximising the value of this resource.

Operating across multiple jurisdictions requires a nuanced understanding of cultural and political dynamics. SABA is committed to maintaining cultural sensitivity while navigating the region’s diverse regulatory and societal landscapes.

Looking ahead, SABA is determined to adopt cloud-based solutions as the foundation for its operations. This approach promises flexibility, scalability, and sustainability, enabling SABA to adapt to the evolving media environment and secure its position as a key player in the region.
