Zambia’s Parliament Pushes For Social Media Monetisation To Empower Content Creators

Zambia’s Parliament has begun debating a motion to promote social media monetisation in the Southern African country.

Legislators who favour the proposal anticipate that information and communication technology will contribute significantly to the country’s GDP in the short term.

This comes as more African countries pressure social media giants to pay content creators on their platforms.

Kenya is one of the countries that successfully bargained for the monetisation of its citizens’ content.

In Zambia, Romeo Kang’ombe, a Member of Parliament from the ruling United Party for National Development, stated: “We urge the government to facilitate the monetisation of social media in Zambia.”

The politician is enthusiastic, saying, “This proposal has the potential to create millionaires in Zambia.”

“Money has to start moving from the books of Facebook to our content creators. Money has to start moving from whoever owns TikTok to our young people because this is happening in other countries.”
