MultiChoice recently apprehended a TV pirate in Gauteng following a raid. He was found allegedly selling DStv login credentials and illegal streaming devices that provide unauthorised access to premium content.
The suspect is scheduled to appear in the Lenasia Magistrate Court today. MultiChoice, in collaboration with the South African police and police detectives from the Eldorado Park police station, conducted a successful raid in Gauteng as part of their broader anti-piracy efforts in Cape Town and Johannesburg. The authorities also seized piracy equipment for further analysis.
The arrested individual has been charged with selling login credentials and streaming devices that facilitate illegal access to premium content, violating South Africa’s Cybercrime Act.
“This raid underscores our ongoing commitment to dismantling illegal operations that undermine the creative industry,” said Frikkie Jonker, Irdeto director of broadcast cybersecurity and anti-piracy.
“We anticipate more raids as we escalate our efforts to combat digital piracy. The police’s professionalism before and during the raid was exemplary and greatly contributed to the operation’s success.”
Partners Against Piracy, an Africa-wide multi-stakeholder initiative, actively collaborates with local governments and prosecutors to combat copyright infringement. Agencies such as the Serious Commercial Crime Unit of the Hawks, South African Police Services, and the Cybercrime Units in various provinces are part of this concerted effort.
